A much-needed Sabbath Rest

This reflection has been written from the point of view of a follower of Jesus present at the time of his death:

Written 29 March 2024

Suggested Scripture: Luke 23:55-56

The Sabbath rest –
oh, how it’s needed today!

Jesus has been laid to rest –
he’s at peace in the tomb,
his body at perfect rest after everything.

And we too take our sabbath rest!
There’s not much happening amongst the group –
each of us are caught in our own emotions,
not quite sure how to react,
or what to say to each other.

So it’s a relief to have nothing one must do,
to be prohibited from those normal daily tasks.
With such a deep sense of loss,
I’m not sure I want to do any of it –
and if I did, would I, a follower of my friend and teacher –
would we be safe?

There’s so much confusion about what’s happened…
so much anxiety about what will come next…
But today, all is calm and at rest,
and we have space to simply be
as we wait…
